A central figure in the Golden Age of Science Fiction, L. Sprague DeCamp (b. 1907) studied aeronautical engineering at the California Institute of Technology and earned his master degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1933. His first scifi work, ΓÇ£The Isolinguals,ΓÇ¥ was published in 1937. Among his early writings are Lest Darkness Fall (1939), a time-traveller who tries to prevent the Dark Ages once he is forced back to sixth-century Rome, and the Johnny Black series about a smart bear ΓÇö ΓÇ£The Command,ΓÇ¥ ΓÇ£The Incorrigible,ΓÇ¥ ΓÇ£The Emancipated,ΓÇ¥ and ΓÇ£The ExaltedΓÇ¥ (1938-40).
